Yard-O-Led

Exclusive edition of 60 movements. Yard-O-Led is not exactly your average, everyday, run-of-the-mill brand name. Yard-O-Led mechanical pencils make a great addition to any setting. Yard-O-Led was founded in by Leopold Brenner when he took out a patent on a pencil mechanism providing the capacity to hold 12 three-inch 7. And, true to form, he introduced England to a number of fancy jewelry ranges in rolled gold and silver — and the first Yard-O-Led writing instruments. The pencil, called the Mordan Everpoint, was crafted in solid silver and gold and never needed sharpening.

Sterling silver is, of course, heavier than other classic pen materials such as resin with a design dating back to the s and featuring a subtle engraved pattern of As is typical of Yard-O-Led pens, it writes smooth and wet, with good flow.

The building itself is accessed through an archway with the most fabulous “tree” gates. Sculpted from steel wire and strip by Michael Johnson when the building was converted from a factory in We were invited as one of Yard-O-Led’s valued partners to take a tour of the factory. Delighted at the prospect of a behind the scenes glimpse of the manufacturing processes the tour by Alex, one of the skilled silversmiths employed by Yard-O-Led, did not disappoint.

These tubes are supplied by another factory in Birmingham in eight different diameters. Here is Alex holding a length of silver tubing.

And, though the name has also been traded along the way, Yard-O-Led has been creating intricate silver writing instruments in Birmingham for over years. We can still repair pencils that are nearly 80 years old. These intricate etchings — a Yard-O-Led design signifier — are made using antique chasing-punchers, which emboss the patterns into the silver.

It is a laborious process, and not easily learned, as apprentices who have trained how to chase on a round barrel tool, practising on scrap silver for a year, have learned. Fountain of knowledge: Yard-O-Led’s silver pen and pencil designs flow with a rich history

Engraved pens and pencils typically have names or initials, but this one has a date. I imagine it being a birth, a graduation, an anniversary, or some other milestone of life that was being commemorated. The pencil is rolled gold in a barley pattern with a hexagonal body. It takes a 1. While almost exactly the same length as a Lamy Scribble which I find very comfortable , this pencil is too short for the way I want to grip it. I want to hold the hexagonal part of the body, just as I would a woodcase pencil.

English Yard O Led Sterling silver twist propelling and mechanical PENCIL MAKER: This item arrived well before the ETA delivery date beautifully packed.

The Viceroy Grand is eccentric, yet refined—this an elegant pen that makes a statement. I love silver and I had to have this pen for my obnoxious oversized pen collection. The Viceroy Grand is massive —the pen itself weighs 46 grams and is mm long. It posts, too—quite well, I might add—making for a pen that is mm long and 64 grams. Yard-O-Led is a charming company with a neat story.

Their writing instruments are, impressively, made by hand by artisans in England largely in the same way they were made years ago—although fountain pens are a relatively modern addition to their lineup. Looking at two pens and being able to tell that they were obviously created by two unique artists is a special experience. Viceroy Grand pens are available in the Victorian finish, as shown, a barleycorn finish, and a pinstripe finish that is a Smythson of Bond Street exclusive, but only the Victorian finish is completely hand chased.

It fills with a standard international converter and there is plenty of room in the barrel for a long international cartridge or a spare short international cartridge, if desired. The most problematic part of this pen is the price. Would I buy it again, even after the price increase? Hell yes.

Recently I received a package of higher end pens from a fellow FPN member. Also this pen made really great impression on me. Their products are very expensive and made of variety of good quality materials.

A few months ago I was able to get a Mascot for a good price. The Mascot is a propelling pencil made from sterling silver. This could be down to the fact that the internal mechanism works in a different way. My pencil came in a Yard-O-Led box and with Yard-O-Led instructions, but as the pen is 60 years old these might not be the original box and instructions that came with the pen.

Including leads the Mascot weighs about 28g and has a diameter of just over 8mm — round pencils tend to have a diameter of about 7. The leads have a diameter of 1. If you are of the metric persuasion: 1 yard has 36 inches, so you would need 36 of these inch long refills for a yard. My Mascot came with 6 leads, but it could probably hold around 12 leads. I assume slightly longer 1. These slightly longer leads are 30mm long.

They are for leads with a diameter of 2mm, but work with 1.
